Legoland Malaysia set for 2012 opening

Construction of Asia's first Legoland theme park has begun, with an opening date scheduled for late 2012.

The 31-hectare theme park, is being built in the Iskandar Malaysia economic zone in the southern state of Johor, near Singapore.

The $236 million park is being developed by IDR Resorts and Merlin Entertainments and will feature more than 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions.

Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, President and Chief Executive of the Iskandar Investment Group and Chairman of IDR Resorts, said next year would be a significant year for Iskandar Investment with the launch of completed projects advised that the development "will create job opportunities for all."

According to a report in Travel Daily Asia, the park will feature 40-rides and models made from Lego bricks, an estimated 30-million of which will be shipped to Malaysia to build the models.

Legoland Malaysia will be the sixth in the world, following existing parks in Denmark, the UK, US and Germany.
