IOC/IAKS launch 2009 Sports & Leisure Facilities award

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) have announced the tender for their renowned architecture award 2009.

The IOC/IAKS award is the most important international architecture award for sports and leisure facilities not only for exemplary buildings and complexes in good functionality but which have been in successful operation.

The IPC/IAKS Distinction aims to promote accessibility to sports facilities and all other buildings in order to give people with a disability the opportunity to practice or view sport without limitation or barriers.

The projects are commended with the IOC/IAKS AWARD for Exemplary Sports and Leisure Facilities. The prizes are conferred in Gold, Silver and Bronze. Winners of the IPC/IAKS DISTINCTION will receive a special trophy with certificates. In addition, facilities with interesting aspects may be also award 'Special Distinctions'.

Eligible to compete are clients/operators and architects/engineers. The entry must be submitted jointly by operators and designers.

The AWARD is presented in the following facility categories:

• Sports grounds/stadia - Sports grounds
• Multipurpose halls and multifunctional arenas - Sports halls - Pools and wellness facilities -
• Winter sports facilities - Special sports facilities - Sports centres.

The price giving ceremony will take place at the International IAKS Congress 2009 in conjunction with the International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities (FSB) in Cologne from the 28th to 30th of October 2009.

Since the introduction of the AWARD in 1987 a total of 302 sport and leisure facilities from more than 30 countries of all continents have been awarded.
