July 26, 2023

A 24-year-old man has died of electrocution while using a treadmill at the Gymplex Fitness Zone in Rohini, Delhi, India.

Police have named the victim as Saksham Pruthi, who worked for tech startup, Sploot in Gurgaon.

The initial incident happened on Tuesday 18th July.

Witnesses said Saksham Pruthi sat down on a treadmill to rest after running, before collapsing.

He was rushed to the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital with a suspected heart attack, where he later died.

During a post-mortem he was found to have died from electrocution.

Delhi Gym Association released a statement instructing members to ensure the earthing connection at their gyms was checked immediately advising "make sure there are no loose wires in areas where people exercise and in this rainy season get your electric points checked by an electrician."

Association president, Bhupendra Sharma shared that this was an isolated incident and should not impact the confidence in the wider gym market.

The gym owner, Anubhav Duggal, has been arrested and booked under laws relating to negligence and causing death by negligence.

There is no suggestion that the treadmill – made by Indian firm Nortus – was to blame.
