Two drown in wave pool incident at Indian waterpark

Two youths have drowned, and one is fighting for life in hospital, after an incident in a wave pool at the Krazy Castle Aqua Park in the Indian city of Nagpur on Sunday.

Reports said almost a dozen persons had got caught in the artificial waves of over two metres in the pool, with other swimmers coming to their aid.

Set for demolition in the coming week as part of an urban improvement project, the waterpark has reportedly never recorded a death in the three decades of its existence.

However, it is facing questions from the Police about improper management and security systems as it reportedly continued to operate the wave pool for at least three hours after the drowning.

In addition, management at the waterpark did not inform the Police, who came to know about the incident from the hospital later in the day.

Sources said many people were caught in the artificial waves in the pool.

Those who died in the waves were identified as Akshay Bind (aged 19) and Sagar Sahastrabudhe (aged 21), while Snehal Motghare (aged 22) is recuperating at a local hospital.

Reports suggest that the injured were sent to hospital in autorickshaws.

The friends of the deceased also challenged the statements of lifeguard Ravi Rahangdale and supervisor Rajesh Badwaik to Police, that they tried their best to save lives. The survivors claimed none of the guards did anything to promptly stop the mechanised waves.

Survivors claimed none of the guards came forward to help, or reacted, even as people shouted to stop the waves.

In addition, it was reported that there was no first aid, nor anyone trained in such skills, at the waterpark.
