Singapore Completes Northern Explorer Park Connector Network

Singapore Completes Northern Explorer Park Connector Network
November 17, 2010

Residents in communities in northern Singapore now have easy and convenient access to 11 parks and nature sites, via the newly completed 25 kilometre Northern Explorer Park Connector Network (PCN).

The 11 parks and nature sites are Admiralty Park, Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Lower Seletar Reservoir Park, Montreal Green, Sembawang Park, Yishun Neighbourhood Park, Yishun Town Garden, Yishun Park, Woodlands Town Park East, Woodlands Town Garden and the recently completed Woodlands Waterfront.

The PCN is also linked to amenities such as the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Republic Polytechnic and the Singapore Sports School.

The Woodlands Waterfront is a key attraction along the PCN, implemented by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Phase 1, which was launched in May 2010, consists of a three hectare coastal park with a refurbished jetty, a multi-generational playground, picnic areas and an event plaza supported by an amenity building with a roof top look-out point. It also features a just-opened 700 metre long cantilevered waterfront promenade - linear trail with lookout points and fitness stations.

The remaining six hectares of the coastal park will be completed by early 2011.

K Shanmugam, Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, who is also MP for Sembawang GRC, was the Guest of Honour at last week's launch of the Northern Explorer PCN were he stated "this Northern Explorer Park Connector Network is an exciting new feature for residents in Sembawang GRC. Residents can enjoy the parks and have convenient access to Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun Towns. The PCN provides a great link to nature and Singaporeâs rich biodiversity. We will continue to work on providing more amenities to our residents."

In addition to exploring parks and nature sites, the Northern Explorer PCN offers both urban and rural settings, providing a wide spectrum of opportunities and experiences to cater to users with different interests with kayak and dragon-boats at Lower Seletar Reservoir Park, a range of heritage and nature experiences, and fitness opportunities.

The Northern Explorer PCN is the third loop of park connectors developed by NParks after the Eastern Coastal PCN (2007) and Western Adventure PCN (2009). Four more loops of park connectors are in the pipeline with the next loop, in the north-eastern part of Singapore, set to be ready in 2011.

With the completion of the Northern Explorer PCN, NParks has completed 150 kilometres of park connectors around the island, providing users with a network of green corridors and a wider choice of landscapes and distances for recreation.
