India’s Alipore Zoological Garden installs braille boards
The Alipore Zoological Garden - India's oldest formally stated zoological park and a big tourist attraction in Kolkata, West Bengal - has become the first zoo in the country to install boards carrying names and descriptions of animals in Braille to help the visually-challenged visitors.
The zoo opened in 1876, and covers 18.811 hectares.
20 Braille Boards have been set in front of 20 enclosures. The initiative was launched by state Forest minister Birbaha Hansda in the presence of some visually-impaired visitors.
Minister Hansda noted “Inclusivity in places of public interest is a major challenge. I am happy that the Alipore Zoo authorities have made the zoo visit a pleasant experience for the visually-challenged.”
Tiger, giraffe and chimpanzee enclosures are among those which have had Braille boards put in place.
