HYROX world competitor spotlights the event’s benefits and potential drawbacks

HYROX world competitor spotlights the event’s benefits and potential drawbacks
October 28, 2024

HYROX - challenging event which combines running with functional workouts – has gained a significant rise in popularity across Australia with curious Australians responsible for the staggering 240% increase* in online searches since January.

HYROX is fast becoming a favourite among fitness enthusiasts nationwide. With four race categories - Open, Pro, Doubles, and Relay - HYROX caters to all fitness levels, making it one of the most inclusive yet demanding fitness events on the global stage. Participants must repeat each movement eight times, pushing their endurance and strength to the limit.

For those unfamiliar, HYROX world competitor, athlete and Lifespan Fitness expert, Peter Day, who is also in Australia’s top 10 for competing in the HYROX World Championships, explains why this trend has Australians hooked and weighs in on both the benefits and potential drawbacks of this high-intensity competition.

Why HYROX is popular in Australia
Day notes “what sets HYROX apart is its accessibility. Unlike many competitive events that are exclusive to professional or advanced athletes, HYROX welcomes participants of all abilities. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a fitness novice, there's a race category for you. The variety of exercises involved means it plays to different strengths, offering something for everyone.

“As HYROX continues to roll out across the country, it’s becoming a social activity as much as a fitness event. It's a fantastic way for people to connect while working out together.”

The global rise in functional fitness, which focuses on exercises rooted in natural movements and functional strength, is another factor contributing to HYROX’s popularity. Day adds “this trend moves beyond traditional cardio or weight training, and HYROX embodies this shift perfectly.”

The Health Benefits and Risks of HYROX
“There are numerous health benefits associated with HYROX,” Day explains. “It builds strength, power, and endurance through a combination of functional exercises and running, which elevates the heart rate while also enhancing muscle growth. This type of training not only improves physical performance but can also be beneficial in everyday activities requiring manual effort. Intense, interval-based training can also help boost metabolism and promote fat loss when paired with proper nutrition and recovery.”

However, as with any high-intensity workout, there are risks.

“HYROX can be particularly demanding, especially for beginners,” advises Day. “Without proper preparation - such as warming up adequately or ensuring you’ve fuelled your body with the right nutrition - you could be more susceptible to burnout, fatigue, or injury.

“Additionally, exercises like running, burpees, and lunges can place strain on the joints, particularly for participants unaccustomed to the volume of training required. It’s essential to listen to your body and be mindful of any existing physical conditions to avoid overexertion.

“Preparation is crucial. No matter your fitness level, taking the time to properly warm up and assess your readiness will help you get the most out of this incredible event.”

Earlier this month, F45 Training Group was announced as the official global training partner of HYROX.

F45 Training, a global fitness community specialising in innovative, functional group workouts that are fast, fun and results-driven, has as of 1st October 2024, seen Australia, New Zealand and Singapore join the global network and further strengthen the HYROX preferred training network alliance.

Tom Dowd, F45 Training Chief Executive noted "If you want to win HYROX, train at F45. Whether members are just starting their fitness journey or looking for a new goal, our partnership with HYROX provides an opportunity to elevate their training. As we expand to include all territories globally on October 1st, 2024, we’re excited to bring this experience to every F45 community.”

While F45 has partnered with HYROX to assist with correct training form - the growing interest in HYROX has also been reflected in home gym equipment supplier Lifespan Fitness’s sales data.

Over the past year (October 2023 – 2024), the company has seen significant uplifts in equipment sales:

  • Treadmills: Up by 18%
  • Stair Climbers: Up by 100%
  • Spin Bikes: Up by 10%
  • Racks, Weight Plates, and Weights: Up by 15%

“In recent months, we’ve had an influx of customers mentioning Hyrox when purchasing equipment for their home gyms,” notes Day adding “people are looking to train specifically for this event, and many are finding that a home gym set-up can be just as effective as traditional fitness venues.”

*Search volume data was taken from SEMrush. It looked at online searches in Australia for ‘hyrox’ comparing January 2024 to 10 October 2024.

  • Average January monthly search volume = 2,900
  • Average October monthly search volume = 9,900

Lifespan Fitness has a comprehensive range of exercise equipment and accessories, including exercise bikes, rowers, and cross-trainers. The Lifespan Fitness range caters to all fitness levels and is encouraging Australians on their fitness journey by giving them the best equipment to enhance their exercise routines.
