Happy Valley Group and SimEx-Iwerks partnership to deliver 4D theatres to Chinese theme parks
December 23, 2021

Happy Valley Group has partnered with SimEx-Iwerks to establish 4D theatres in eight Happy Valley theme parks located in Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chongqing, Nanjing, Xi’an and a 4D theatre in Xiangyang Fantasy Valley.

SimEx-Iwerks has over 30 years of experience in attraction design and integration, developing an extensive 4D film catalogue. It has built and operated more than 350 attractions around the world and established cooperative relations with more than 50 parks, science and technology venues and cinematic attractions in China. The introduction of SimEx-Iwerks 4D cinema technology supports Happy Valley’s strategic goal of building a world-class theme park industrial group.

SimEx-Iwerks 4D experiences continues to expand with Frostbite – Dino Island III. SimEx-Iwerks’ Dino Island attractions have been one of the most popular dinosaur-themed ride experiences and since the mid ‘90s, audiences in over 30 countries have been thrilled and captivated by the universal and endless appeal of Dino Island’s dinosaurs. Frostbite – Dino Island III continues this highly successful legacy, combining cutting-edge multimedia and flying theatre technologies with world-class storytelling.

Flying theatres are custom motion simulator experiences that give the sensation of flight via a combination of specialty cinema and special effects – and allowing guests’ feet to dangle.

Mike Frueh, Senior Vice President, Licensing and Distribution, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment advises “our previous Dino Island films are the most successful, widely distributed ride films in our catalogue. We are excited to release this high-action, custom film for both our FlyRide® and 4D Theatres. The show will work as a stand-alone experience as well as a fantastic complement to dinosaur-themed special exhibits.

“In Frostbite – Dino Island III, guests explore a volcanic island where dinosaurs are frozen in ice caves.Their flying theatre capsules are attached to a crane arm on an off-road electric vehicle. As they pass by the ice, they can see each dinosaur in detail, but then the volcano erupts, the ice melts, and as often happens on these kinds of ridefilms, havoc ensues.”

Richard Needham, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment Creative Director adds “it has been a lot of fun developing the next chapter of the Dino Island story. We want this attraction to really showcase all the best attributes of flying theatres and 4D Experiences®, from the ride dynamics to the environmental effects.
