ClassPass and Mindbody look back at fitness and wellness trends for 2022
December 9, 2022

Having analysed tens of thousands of reservations from January 2022 to October 2022 to understand how people are experiencing fitness and wellness this year, ClassPass and Mindbody share their findings.

Focussed on the US market, the findings are as follows:

Both fitness and wellness experiences are on the rise - fitness reservations increased 95% from 2021 and wellness reservations increased by 62%.

Fastest growing fitness workouts in 2022:

Fitness trends change over the years (does anyone remember Jazzercise?) and 2022 is no different. Certain fitness classes have exploded this year, including sculpt classes and Acro yoga classes.

Sculpt classes - often a subset of Pilates, yoga and strength training - was the fastest growing workout of 2022 with a 471% increase in bookings from January to October.

Acro Yoga also saw growth, with reservations increasing 200% in 2022. So, if you’re looking to improve your flexibility and try your hand at acrobatics, might be a good time to give it a go.

The most popular workouts in 2022:

  1. Strength Training
  2. Yoga
  3. Pilates
  4. Cycling
  5. Barre
  6. Boxing
  7. Gym Time
  8. Running
  9. Dance
  10. Stretching

Strength training continues to be the most popular workout of 2022 for the second year in a row. Not only did it hold the top spot year-over-year but people also actually attended strength training classes more often in 2022 than 2021 - there was a 94% increase in reservations from 2021 to 2022.

Dance made the top 10 list in 2021 for the first time ever and stayed in 2022 as the ninth most popular fitness booking. This year, Bollywood Dance saw a 159% increase in reservations and Belly Dance saw a 154% increase.

As exercising expands beyond just breaking a sweat, for the first time ever, stretching made the top 10 fitness reservations list. Whether it’s recovery, preventative, or a low impact way to get your blood flowing, it’s important to incorporate stretching into your routine.

The most popular wellness reservations in 2022:

  2. Nails
  3. Facial
  4. Sauna
  5. Meditation
  6. Hair Styling

ClassPass users are eager to try out wellness bookings alongside their typical fitness routine - over one third of ClassPass credits are spent on wellness appointments.

The most popular wellness booking in 2022 is massage - an improvement from 2021 where massage was number two. More people were also into meditation - meditation bookings jumped from eighth on the list in 2021 to number five in 2022.

Eyelash services have made the list for the first time ever and were the fastest growing spa and salon appointment of 2022. Lash lift bookings are up 2400% from January, and lash tinting is up 1611%.

Tuesday classes are most popular: You are most likely to see a packed class on Tuesday at 5:30 pm - the most popular time and day to workout. Classes that are 60 minutes are most likely to book out, and the 60-minute slot is the most-popular class length.

ClassPass users are a mix of experienced exercisers and newbies, and newbies are most likely to be found on a bike. The most popular first class on ClassPass is a cycling class.
